A Yield mapping records how harvested output varies across a field. The map can guide later investigation, but a low value does not by itself identify whether soil, pests, water, machine delay or measurement error caused the difference. B The simplified chain begins at the crop entering a harvester and ends with a georeferenced map. Calibration is required because sensor readings and the delay between cutting and measurement can shift or distort the mapped pattern. C The field location is recorded by a GPS receiver mounted on the machine. As grain passes through the harvester, a yield sensor estimates its flow, and a moisture sensor measures water content so output can be adjusted to a common basis. D An onboard computer combines the time-matched measurements with position data. After cleaning and calibration, the records are displayed as a yield map showing spatial variation across the harvested field. E Analysts remove impossible values and account for turns, stops and the time taken for crop to reach the sensor. They compare patterns across seasons before treating one low-yield strip as a stable management zone. F The diagram omits many machine components and does not prescribe a farming decision. Ground observations and knowledge of weather, soil and management are needed to explain the mapped differences.
