A Urban excavation often exposes deposits created at different times. Archaeologists read their physical relationships before removing them, since the order in which layers formed helps reconstruct activity at the site. B The section drawing represents one vertical face of a trench. Colours and textures would normally be recorded in detail, but the simplified version labels only five major units and relationships. C The uppermost continuous deposit is topsoil, which includes recent material and disturbance. Beneath it lies an occupation layer containing traces of past use. Both rest above natural subsoil, the geological material that predates the human activity shown here. D A later cut feature passes down through the occupation layer. Soil and artefacts that accumulated or were placed inside this cut form the fill deposit, which must be recorded separately from the older layer through which the feature was dug. E Dating evidence from the fill gives a latest possible period for digging the feature but does not necessarily date every object found in it. Some artefacts can be older material moved from another deposit. F A section records only the relationships visible on one face. Archaeologists combine it with plans, photographs and finds from the wider trench before assigning a phase to the whole site.
