Sleep and Memory

A For the present account of sleep and memory, memory continues to change after learning, and sleep is one period in which new information may be stabilised. In cognitive neuroscience, the term consolidation refers to the process by which a new memory becomes more stable. The definition gives researchers a common starting point for discussing sleep and memory, but it does not identify a cause by itself. Two observations of sleep and memory can share the label consolidation while differing in scale, timing or origin. B Knowledge of sleep and memory accumulated unevenly across laboratories and everyday learning. A striking report could establish that a pattern existed, yet it could not show whether memory consolidation operated elsewhere. Researchers examining sleep and memory therefore moved toward shared definitions and planned comparisons based on delayed recall tests rather than discarding the earlier record. C Researchers rely chiefly on delayed recall tests to investigate sleep and memory. Research on sleep and memory has found that participants learn material, sleep or remain awake, and then complete matched recall tests after controlled delays. They decide their comparison, exclusions and outcome measures for sleep and memory in advance. A result about sleep and memory is treated as stronger when it survives more than one source of evidence, not simply when one instrument measuring sleep and memory reports many decimal places. D The evidence about sleep and memory is informative but conditional. One point relevant to sleep and memory is that sleep often supports later memory, but effects depend on the task, prior learning and what occurs during the comparison period. Researchers test memory consolidation as an explanation. Evidence reviewed for sleep and memory shows that new memories are reorganised and stabilised after initial learning. Confidence in memory consolidation rises when independent measures of sleep and memory agree and rival explanations fail, rather than when a single comparison happens to be statistically precise. E Practical programmes translate evidence about sleep and memory into action. The discussion of sleep and memory notes that teachers and learners protect sleep and space practice instead of relying on late-night repetition. Their stated focus is learning retention. Teams working on sleep and memory compare later outcomes with conditions before implementation and record unintended effects. This evaluation of sleep and memory determines whether the original explanation involving memory consolidation remains useful outside the research setting. F Interpretation of sleep and memory must stop short of a universal claim. For the present account of sleep and memory, a sleep group and a daytime wake group also differ in time of day, interference and fatigue unless the design controls them. Future work on sleep and memory is organised around matched daily studies. For future research on sleep and memory, matched daily studies will measure sleep, time of day and intervening experiences in the same participants. This use of matched daily studies targets a specific uncertainty about sleep and memory rather than merely increasing the volume of data.
