E Practical programmes translate evidence about microplastics into action. The discussion of microplastics notes that policies target avoidable releases from products, wastewater, tyres and poorly managed waste. Their stated focus is source reduction. Teams working on microplastics compare later outcomes with conditions before implementation and record unintended effects. This evaluation of microplastics determines whether the original explanation involving fragmentation remains useful outside the research setting. F Interpretation of microplastics must stop short of a universal claim. For the present account of microplastics, finding particles does not by itself establish harm, and airborne fibres can contaminate samples during collection or analysis. Future work on microplastics is organised around harmonised sampling. For future research on microplastics, harmonised sampling and reference materials will make concentration estimates more comparable across laboratories. This use of harmonised sampling targets a specific uncertainty about microplastics rather than merely increasing the volume of data.
